Archaeobotanical perspectives on the naturalness of prehistoric and early historic marshes

Activity: Talk and presentationAcademic presentationAcademic

Description

There is a strong tradition of suggesting that coastal marshes were 'natural' until the construction of more permanent embankments (dikes) in the High and Late Middle Ages. This active alienation of the more distant past obstructs a more nuanced and insightful understanding of human-environment relations within an environment now generally labelled as 'nature' or even ' wilderness'. I will show examples of signs of early human impact, without unnecessarily downplaying the natural side of these former landscapes.
