Attention, Memory, and Narrative Attribution: Comparing 2D and 3D Viewership Using Eye-tracking and Self-report Measures

    Description

This talk contributes to the contemporary discourse of cinematic 3D imaging technology. Until now, much of the dispute about the value of 3D has focused on the technique as a mere visual attraction (that aims at perfecting the cinematic illusion or increasing perceptual immersion). In this presentation, I shift this focus by contemplating the use of 3D as a technique that can support the unfolding narrative. The paper presents an empirical case study, comparing self-report and eye-tracking data collected from 2D and 3D viewings of a specific film scene from Michel Gondry’s 2011 The Green Hornet, to explore visual attention, memory and narrative interpretation of the film.
