Description

It is critcall not only to assess competence but also to ensurte residents develop self-reflection, responsibility, and a professional attitude. However, achieving these developmental milestones is not always straightforward, as evidenced by case series indicating behaviors such as inadequate reflection, externalization, concealment, excessive perfectionism, and struggels with balancing workstress and personal well-being. The question arises: How can you, as a mento, coach or program director, encourage residents to change their behavior and attitude? It’s about inspiring them to step out their comfort zones, to foster curiosity, and to nurture creativity to achieve learning goals and avoid burnout. In this interactive workshop we will introduce a target model and methods for coaching residents, which are instrumental in cultivating self-reflection and stimulates conscious, effective responses in future professional situations. Participants will have the opportunity to hone these coaching techniques in small group excervcises and are encouraged to share own cases from their experience with residents.
We will explore the three key elements of the Job demands recource (JDR) model (job-demands, job-resources, and regulators) of Bakker, Schaufeli and Demerouti and introduce the Job-crafting process . The JDR model is a powerful tool for analyzing specific situations and enhancing your Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) program. It aids in pinpointing specific issues, thereby improving educator and program director well-being, and equipping you to better coach your residents.
Participants will engage with a gamified version of the JDR model in small groups. This serves as an effective method for experiencing the balance between demands and resources within the PGME program. The game facilitates deeper insight and skill development in job crafting and and promotes strategies to foster physician well-being.
This interactive session will not only enhance your understanding of coaching principles but also empower you to integrate coaching behaviours in your daily practice.
