Description

From 30 March to 10 April the course ‘Death in the Greek World’ took place at the Netherlands Institute Athens, organized by Sofia Voutsaki, with assistance from Tamara Dijkstra, Olivia Jones, and Eleni Panagiotopoulou. This course, organized in cooperation with the University of Groningen, dealt with various aspects of death in Greece. The diachronic approach started with prehistory and continued throughout the historical periods to traditional Greek laments and 19th century neoclassical grave monuments. The multidisciplinary scope of the course included archaeology, history, classical Greek literature, epigraphy, anthropology, social sciences and bioarchaeology. Both methodological innovations and theoretical discourses were discussed during the course. An excursion, guided by Professors Voutsaki and Van Nijf, led the group of (PhD)students throughout Attica, Thessaly and all the way to Thessaloniki in northern Greece.
