Developing Circular Reconstruction Strategies for Türkiye

Activity: Organising and attending an event Organising and contributing to an event Professional

    Description

In response to the pressing challenges faced by Türkiye in the earthquake region, including the management of over 200 million tonnes of waste, the urgent need for rapid housing production, and a lack of infrastructure, researchers from TU Delft organized two different events in Ankara on 10-11 January. These events were funded by the Embassy Science Fellowship, supported by NWO (Dutch Research Council) and Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. These events aimed to explore the potential of the circular economy in addressing Türkiye's challenges, particularly in the aftermath of natural disasters.

dr. Özlemnur Ataol from the Faculty of Spatial Sciences was invited to coordinate a student workshop on January 10th. This workshop engaged approximately 40 students from Bilkent, Gazi, Hacettepe, and TED universities. Using the #CircularCityChallenge framework developed by dr. Ataol, which is part of the ERA-NET Urban Transformation capacities, students generated innovative solutions utilizing circular economy principles for post-disaster areas.
