A key but sometimes unconsidered scenario of the energy transition are the seas. The seas offer an important potential for deploying sustainable energy such as offshore wind farms. However, in many countries, the seas are already used intensively creating a tension between marine shipping, fisheries, ecosystems, tourism and energy.In this context, Marine Spatial Planning has emerged as an important tool for coordinating different sea-uses. But, how does Marine Spatial Planning work in practice? and what are the limits of this approach?
To answer these questions, our former board member Rozanne Spijkerboer will share her experience as a researcher and practitioner on the Dutch North Sea. The Netherlands is an interesting example of the use of Marine Spatial Planning to improve the coordination among different sea-uses. An important step towards such coordination is the "North Sea Agreement", presented in February to the Dutch parliament.
Rozanne was part of the team who conducted this agreement.
