Presentation: MY PLOT, YOUR PLAT, OUR INHABITED LANDSCAPE: EARLY MODERN LAND SURVEYORS AND THE RECORD OF EUROPEAN PHYSICAL SPACE
The process of reading and recording our historical landscape and the cognitive impact this process must have had on its inhabitants has not been sufficiently studied. This PhD-project aims to fill this gap through a study of the perception and communication of early modern agrarian change and argues for an understanding of a socially constructed and negotiated landscape. Central to my research are the activities and interactions between early modern land surveyors and local communities in the Dutch-German border region and the Anglo-Scottish borderlands.
