Groningen Lectures in Movement Sciences: What do you think about when you walk? - Nerrolyn Ramstrand

Groningen Lectures in Movement Sciences: Four times a year the Center for Human Movement Sciences and the Graduate School of Behavioral and Cognitive Neurosciences jointly organize the ‘Groningen Lectures in Movement Sciences’ (GLMS). In this series, outstanding researchers from the Netherlands and abroad present a lecture on a human movement sciences topic. The speakers will present in English and the lectures are open to attend for everybody interested. Abstract: For an able-bodied individual the act of walking requires little conscious effort. We do not need to think about the movements of our legs but instead can focus on other important factors; a car approaching a crosswalk or a number we are dialing on our phone. For individuals with disabilities affecting locomotion, walking becomes less automatic and less conscious resources are available for other activities. This seminar will address the issue of cognitive resources required for walking by comparing able bodied individuals to individuals who have undergone a lower-limb amputation. Particular attention will be given to studies currently being conducted at Jönköping University which use functional near-infrared spectroscopic topography (fNIRS) technology to map patterns of brain activity as individuals perform increasingly difficult walking tasks. Results of research will be discussed in terms of our understanding of motor control and recovery of motor function and in relation to the development of more effective rehabilitation programs.
