Perceiving Piazzolla: Étude #5 with Hearing Loss

The exhibit "Transtonations" brings together artworks inspired by Piazzolla’s Étude #5. But how is the brain responding to the music, and informing our emotions? And what happens when we cannot hear every part of the music, due to hearing loss? Dr. Ellie Harding is a cognitive scientist working at the University Medical Center Groningen, and conducts research about music perception in hard-of-hearing populations. Dr. Harding will talk about acoustic features of the Étude #5 and how the brain typically interprets these features, as well as how our emotions might engage with the music. She will also give examples of how hearing loss might affect perception of the Étude #5 and encourage the audience to discuss how hearing loss may influence interpretations of the other Transtonations exhibits.
