Description
The archaeological sites of Hardinxveld Giessendam de Bruin and Polderweg, situated in the Rhine-Meuse delta, feature the earliest indications of animal husbandry in the Netherlands. However, due to the challenges in identifying domesticates among the faunal remains, inconsistent excavation documentation, and flawed radiocarbon analysis, the chronologies of these sites remain uncertain. My PhD thesis focuses on resolving this problem by analysing previously published records, conducting new radiocarbon dating on carefully selected animal bones, and unifying these datasets with a method called Bayesian statistics. The main aim of this project is to provide a chronological backbone to the NWO-funded project ‘Emergence of Domesticated Animals in the Netherlands’ (EDAN), which focuses on the nature, timing and impact of early animal husbandry in the Dutch wetlands. In this talk, I will present the first results on these sites, offering an insight into the contribution of this approach to achieving precise site chronologies.| Period | 15-Apr-2021 |
