The Dutch Translators’ Dictionary (Vertalerslexicon voor het Nederlandstalig gebied – https://www.vertalerslexicon.nl/) was developed at the University of Groningen with help of the software provided by the Swedish, the German and the Norwegian translators’ dictionaries. The design was adapted by the chief editor Petra Broomans to the Dutch context in collaboration with the IT-staff of the University Library in Groningen, the editorial board and the advisory board. The University Library is hosting the digital translators’ database and facilitates the IT-support. Contributing authors come from various disciplines and language areas: literature and culture, history, cultural transfer, translation studies, researchers into linguistic history, translators and literary critics.As in many small language areas, a large part of the literature read in the Dutch-speaking area consists of translated works. Translations have also contributed to the language and literature of the Dutch-speaking area. However, this has hardly been integrated or discussed in Dutch education and research. The purpose of the database Vertalerslexicon.nl is twofold: on the one hand to provide the recently developed research field of cultural transfer with new material by means of an innovative instrument, on the other hand to inform the general public about the invisible role of cultural transmitters in the national (literary) history. The hitherto published articles contain new material from lost archives, photos were also found of translators of whom it was not known what they looked like. Portraits of some other translators are still missing.
The aim is to offer a bilingual translators’ dictionary (Dutch and English). To start with, short introduction texts are translated from Dutch into English. The future goal is to establish a European network, a hyper translators’ dictionary. This could result in more knowledge of a.o. translation flows, agency of (groups of) cultural transmitters and the prerequisites of (un)succesful transfers.
