Description

Scientific data on Climate Change and the Energy Transition in Latin America: opportunities and challenges: Presentation during the panel “Our house is burning. Scientific effective targeting to put out the Fire - Official Side Event of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - COP-25”.

In my intervention, I shared my analysis on the challenges and opportunities of Latin America in the context of the energy transition and climate change.

The share of renewable energy sources in the final energy consumption in Latin America is one of the highest worldwide (24% compared to the global average of 10%), and yet, the region is one of the most vulnerable. In Latin America, it is expected that by 2050 17 million people will be displaced due to climate change.

Besides contributing to tackle a social emergency, in Latin America the energy transition should be addressed as a matter of competitiveness to overcome at least 3 challenges: 1) reliability to the energy sector 2) universal electricity access to 12 million people who lack of this service 3) modern energy to 83 million people who rely on traditional sources of energy (e.g. wood
Some challenges in the region are 1) finance 2) technology 3) fossil fuel dependent economies and 4) regional and international energy agreements.

This analysis will be published in 2020 as part of my article on the Paris Agreement and the energy transition in Latin America.
