Farming insects on manure

Press/Media: ResearchAcademic

Description

Prof. dr. Leo Beukeboom's consortium researched the suitability of manure as a nutrient medium for breeding insects, which are a high-quality source of protein for humans and animals. The use of chicken and pig manure proved to be a cheap and sustainable way to produce protein and also makes a circular contribution to the manure problem.

DescriptionDutch scientists have researched the suitability of poultry manure as a nutrient medium for breeding insects

Although Europe legislation has for many years barred the use of animal protein in feed due to BSE, insects have recently been made an exception – unless they are grown on manure.

Leo Beukeboom, professor of evolutionary genetics at the University of Groningen, said the project wanted to address 2 challenges at the same time.

The residual stream generated by insect farming itself could also be used in a circular way, according to prof. dr. Marcel Dicke's consortium. They concluded that this residual flow can not only be used very well as manure, but also has a beneficial effect on soil quality, crop growth and crop health.

DescriptionMore and more companies are farming insects for human consumption and animal feed. This project investigated whether houseflies can be farmed using manure as a substrate: a useful application of this waste stream. The results are promising. The process can be fine-tuned to optimise production.
