Degree of recognition International Media name/outlet Ruetir Media type Web Country/Territory United States Date 05/11/2022 Description With days getting shorter and shorter, fall feels like the starting gun for misery for some people. Research by the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) often quoted shows that roughly 3 percent of the Dutch population, or more than 500,000 people, indicates that they suffer from a ‘seasonal depression’ in the autumn. The disorder is described in the psychiatric manual DSM-V as a form of depression and in terms of symptoms can largely be compared with those of regular depression. Another 8.5 percent have these characteristics in a milder form – not winter depression, but a winter dip. People with seasonal depression are also being diagnosed in other countries, especially those with higher latitudes. What causes that gloom? Why does light, or lack thereof, affect our mood? And: what can be done about it?
