Development of mudflats on the country's eastern coast threatens migratory birds, including rare species.
The two-page newspaper article reviews the problems for migratory birds of the Luannan wetlands presented during a conference in the coastal city Tangshan, in Hebei province. It includes interviews with professor Zhang Zhengwang and other researchers from Beijng Normal University, and with Theunis Piersma.
The paper presents infographics on population trends of shorebirds, tidal-flat organism and ecosystem services. Also detailed information on dredging and the effects of the economic boom in coastal areas on vulnerable wetlands is given.
Furthermore an interview with GFN researcher Chris Hassell is included in a separate section: Flight of the Ornithologist.
