Four experimental locations: (1) ‘‘mussel bed’’(bare patches between the mussel aggregations inside themussel bed); (2) ‘‘coastward of the mussel bed’’ at adistance of;100 m coastward from the mussel bed; (3)in a sandy area without mussels at the same elevation asthe mussel bed (‘‘lower sandy site’’); and (4) in a sandyarea without mussels at the same elevation relative tomean sea level as the area of the cockle peak (‘‘uppersandy site’’). At each location we randomly designated four 131 m experimental plots.
