Personal profile

Research interests

My research interests include theoretical aspects of cosmological models, particularly those of the primordial Universe, as well as field theory aspects of gravity. In the former field, I have contributed to different models of inflation, as well as their observational signatures. In the latter field, my main interests currently focus on the double copy framework of gravity.

Diederik Roest received his PhD in theoretical physics in 2004 with the distinction cum laude. After postdoctoral positions in London and Barcelona, he joined the University of Groningen in 2008 with a VIDI fellowship. He was appointed assistant professor in 2010, associate professor in 2014 and full professor in 2019. His research interests focus on theoretical cosmology and gravity. Prominent examples include his work on models of the Big Bang, combining field-theoretical aspects to derive observational predictions for the later Universe, as well as his current interest in the double copy relations between gravity and Yang-Mills theories. He has been (or currently is) the supervisor of 13 PhD students. Moreover, from 2020 onwards he has been appointed as Programme director for the BSc programme in Physics and in Applied physics, as well as Educational director for the Van Swinderen Institute for Particle Physics and Gravity.
