My research focuses on the reception of “Gnosticism” in all areas of Western culture, from esotericism, philosophy, theology, politics, to fiction.
My doctoral dissertation will be devoted to the idea of the Gnostic myth in Hollywood (1990-2003). Taking into account recent developments in Gnostic studies, the theoretical part of the thesis will be centered around the works of Hans Jonas, Carl G. Jung, Eric Voegelin. A particular attention will be paid to the ways in which these authors pictured the relationship between Gnosticism and modernity. The analytical part will be focused on intertextual relationships between a selected group of films, e.g. The Truman Show (1998), Dark City, The Matrix (1999), and the examined approaches to Gnostic ideas. The aim of this research is to assess the extent to which the films can contribute to the debate on the relationship between Gnosticism and modernity.
