His research has also a regional focus on Turkey and the Kurdish question through the arts.

Biosketch

Dr. Pieter Verstraete is a (music) theatre scholar, dramaturg, cultural critic and policy advisor. He is currently a tenured Senior Lecturer (UD1) at the Arts, Culture and Media department of the University of Groningen. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Theatre and Performance (EJTP), elected ExCom member of EASTAP, and the current Chair of the MCAA Benelux Chapter.

From September 2020 until March 2023, he was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the Institut für Theaterwissenschaft of the Freie Universität Berlin as PI of the ExiLives project. He has frequently given expert advise to Arts Councils in the Netherlands and Flanders on developments in music theatre and opera.

His expertise splits into two main research directions: On the one hand, he engage critically with European theatre and performance traditions that experiment with sound, voice and music, often in interactive and intermedial ways, to discuss developments in multimodal spectatorship and aurality (auditory imagination). On the other hand, he focuses on political and social issues in the theatre with a specific interest in Turkish and Kurdish artists, which include debates on intercultural community, diaspora, (post)migration, exile, decoloniality, censorship, activism, resilience, (neo)nationalism, and performative democracy.

He is co-editor of books: Inside Knowledge: (Un)doing Ways of Knowing in the Humanities (CSP 2009), Cathy Berberian: Pioneer of Contemporary Vocality (Ashgate/Routledge 2014), and Theatre, Performance and Commemoration: Staging Crisis, Memory and Nationhood (Bloomsbury/Methuen Drama 2023). He is currently working on two edited volumes: Performing Resilience: Intersectionality and Agonistic Solidarity for Another Turkey (contracted with Routledge, forthcoming 2026), and Imagining an Alternative Turkey: Mobilizing Resistance, Publics, Affects (contracted with Palgrave, forthcoming 2026).
