Abstract

Biofuels are considered a key player for the transition to green energy and sustainable development in the coming decades. Biofuels have significantly attractive aspects due to their contribution in the energy independence, the urban and rural development, the improvement of ecological footprint, and the reduction of carbon emissions. Despite the advances in the production processes, there is intrinsic interest in the sustainability facets of biofuel production processes. The goal of this study is to explore and review current industrial production routes of biofuels and discuss the links between technological progress and sustainable development.
