Abstract

• A multidisciplinary approach is essential in archaeometric investigations of ancient salt production.

• Using Cl as a proxy to identify briquetage is not always reliable; B or Br could be valid substitutes.

• The connection among researchers studying salt production is suboptimal and needs enhancement.

• Experimental archaeology in ancient salt production can reveal much about the chaîne opératoire.
