Abstract

Neurological monitoring during surgical procedures on the substance, supporting structures and blood supply of the nervous system can help prevent ischaemic and mechanical damage. Current techniques enable monitoring of cerebral blood flow, oxygenation, intracranial pressure and function. Intraoperative neurological monitoring can provide early warning of impending critical cerebral ischaemia at a stage when prompt corrective action can prevent permanent neurological damage.
