    Clifford Geertz (*1926) is one of the most influential anthropologists of his generation. His most famous monographs and collection of essays are The Religion of Java, Agricultural Involution, Islam Observed, The Interpretation of Cultures, Local Knowledge, Negara: The Balinese Theatre State in Nineteenth Century Bali. In this book eight Dutch anthropologists analyse and evaluate his work. With an introduction of the editors.
