Abstract

There is a vast literature documenting the geography of start-ups and their impact on regional economic development. A shortcoming of many studies is their focus on the frequency of start-ups rather than the characteristics of start-ups. Understanding the heterogeneity in start-ups is important as it may explain why the economic effect of start-ups differ across the urban hierarchy. This chapter provides an explorative account of differences in the characteristics of start-ups across the urban hierarchy in Sweden. We find evidence that the difference between urban and rural entrepreneurship is manifest particularly in a skill gap in entrepreneurship.
