Abstract
In the present paper, the quality of the Eritrean Secondary Education Certificate Examinations (ESECE) has been evaluated by investigating the reliability of its two compulsory parts – the English Language and Mathematics tests. An item analysis has also been done. In view of the low correlations between its subtest scores, the English language examination seems to test several abilities. Since many examination questions in English Language and Mathematics lack the power of discriminating between poor and good students, the quality of both examinations should be improved by changing its composition and/or revising bad items. It has been observed that deleting the bad items for the Mathematics examination would have resulted in better grades for almost a quarter of the candidates with possibly important consequences for their educational future.
