Mooi vies, knap lelijk (based on a doctoral thesis) demonstrates that the aesthetic principles of grotesque realism were operational in the manufacture of sixteenth-century Netherlandish farce, and argues how this indicates a highly experimental phase in drama culture in the early modern Low Countries.
