Abstract
This master thesis focuses on the image of ‘the other’ in realistic Dutch children’s books in the post-war period (1945-1970). Is the stereotypical version of the other in this period mainly positive or negative? Ten children’s books were analysed, based on pre-defined theoretical aspects. This research shows indeed that the ‘the other’ in post-war children’s books are mostly characterised as weird or strange in the introduction of the character. Analysing these books in full however, shows a turnaround in the depiction of ‘the other’ in the course of the storyline. Also, moralisation and focalisation play an important role in how ‘the other’ in these books are depicted.
