Abstract

This chapter examines the contentious Dutch tradition of Black Pete and its implications for systemic racism. It analyzes evolving Dutch attitudes towards Black Pete and the broader debate on blackface traditions worldwide. The chapter highlights the damaging effects of such traditions, and calls for a global reckoning to address racial stereotypes and promote equality. Through the lens of the Black Lives Matter movement, it discusses the ongoing efforts to challenge and change these cultural practices in the Netherlands and beyond.
