Abstract

The Distischa Catonis was in origin a late first-century collection of Latin proverbs used in Roman, medieval, and renaissance schools to teach good Latin and good morals. That this work was a fundamental text of Western schooling, which formed attitudes towards wisdom transmitted from the past, and taught the rudiments of correct Latinity, makes its study an important chapter in pedagogic, moral, and intellectual history. Erasmus published his edition of this influential text with brief comments in 1514, which, for his authorized and many more unauthorized printers was a great business success.
