Abstract
Abstract
Since 2018 the neighborhood renewal plan for the Indische Buurt and De Hoogte has focused on the development of children in these neighbourhoods. The Unicef’s Child Friendly City concept has been used to provide tools for this. However, it is still unclear how children and parents experience the Indische Buurt and De Hoogte as child friendly neighborhoods. This research focusses on the following main question: What experiences do the children and parents from the Indische Buurt and De Hoogte in Groningen have with the goals of a Child Friendly City and what else do they think is important in the neighborhood? To answer the main question, a literature review and practical research were carried out. The experiences of children and parents were investigated by analyzing scientific literature and conducting interviews in the Indische Buurt and De Hoogte. The results show that children and parents have different experiences with the goals of a Child Friendly City. This is not fully consistent with the literature on this. Being heard and participating is experienced most positively, but the unsafe and polluted environment is experienced most negatively by children and parents. According to parents a safe environment is the most important. Children want to be able to move freely in the neighborhood. It is recommended to conduct repeat research with a larger sample size, investigate the unsafe feelings of the children and parents and research the communication with parents.
