Abstract
Concepts and approaches to study disruption and change of everyday life during flash flood events.
The dynamics of extreme precipitations and consequential flash-floods in Southern France lead to important variations in vulnerability of people and property across space and time. In turn, these events have consequences for the pace and type of adaptive behaviour of people. Both the hydrological and adaptation processes of people to such hazardous events are complex phenomena. In order to understand the interaction between these, innovative research methods are needed, grounded in existing theory and operationalised by concepts that account for the continuous process of everyday behaviour. A number of concepts and methodological approaches will be discussed, originating from a variety of research contexts, that are concerned with how people perceive sudden change and disruption, how people cope with dynamic environments and what this means for the goals and activities of people’s everyday life.
