    Abstract

This volume contains nine ethnographic narratives of young adults living and designing a life for themselves in a variety of urban Asian contexts. The chapters range from East Asia (Beijing, Taipei, Shanghai, Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka and Hong Kong) to Southeast Asia (Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh City) and South Asia (Colombo and Dhaka). The actors presented in the chapters express economic, political, social, cultural, educational, physical, national, transcendental and familial aspirations. Taking all these chapters together, we obtain a unique picture of the theory of aspirations at play. The collection of chapters in this volume has presented us with empirical evidence to understand changing aspirations and lifestyles in various Asian contexts that are at different stages of economic development and integration into global capitalism and consumerism. They also grant us the possibility of examining the cultural and ideological discourses behind aspirations, which are related to divisions between classes, generations and ethnicities.
