    Abstract

Combined nanoindentation and XTEM investigations were carried out on TiC/a-C nanocomposite coatings. The most striking findings related to the deformation and toughening mechanisms are: firstly, multiple shear bands delocalizing shear deformation and secondly nanoparticles flow and reordering in the a-C matrix.
