Abstract

In this article we respond to the response of Karbouniaris and colleagues (2023). We share the goal of making care for patients as effective as possible, in which the patient has optimal self-management and can choose from a wide range of effective treatments. The current standard of care for trauma-related disorders contains a broader palette than CBT and EMDR, takes into account the patient’s experiential knowledge and is based on good research into effectiveness. We see it as the practitioner’s task to properly inform the patient about the treatments included in the standard of care, including the advantages and disadvantages, the degree of proven effects and the effectiveness of those treatments. At the same time, information should protect the patient against treatments that have not (yet) been (sufficiently) proven to be effective or – even worse – may be harmful. The right knowledge optimizes self-management in patients.
