From the Historia Ecclesiastica by the Venerable Bede (ca. 672-135) it may be derived that in the second half of the seventh century a monastery was founded on the Isle of Ely (Cambs.) by Saint Etheldreda (Athelthryth), daughter of king Anna of East Anglia.
