Abstract

This paper discusses the development, realization, and characterization of a demonstrator cryogenic chopper for METIS, the third instrument on the ELT. The chopper has to tip/tilt in 2D with a combined angle of up to 13.6mrad and achieve a 95% duty cycle at 5Hz. The mirror (Ø64mm) is guided by a monolithic flexure mechanism with its angular position actuated by three linear actuators and measured by three linear position sensors, resulting in a fast steering mirror. The initial results of the test program for performance validation are presented in this paper.
