Abstract

A predator-prey model from biodynamics was the inspiration for the definition of a ma- thematical toy model that folds and twists the plane. These fold an twist are repeated and repeated, again and again. Then it turns out that a number of mathematical properties, for example chaotic behavior, occurs in both models. But not only in the predator-prey map the fold and twist is a fundamental property this fold and twist occurs also in the Lorenz-63 model which is originated from meteorology. The mathematical properties of this model can also be better understood as it is considered as a fold and twist. So the fold and twist is a fundamental property of maps where different states at one moment leads to the same state in the next one.
