    Abstract

As I write my first editorial as the incoming editor-in-chief of the European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry, a recent similarly themed editorial ‘Stephen Hancocks - the greatest showman’ in the British Dental Journal from my friend Prof. Avi Banerjee comes to mind. Avi was praising the qualities of the retiring 20-year Editor-in-Chief Stephen Hancocks; and the qualities mentioned are similar to our retiring Editor-in-Chief, Nick Lygidakis—a friend of many (and mine), a sounding board, confidant and mentor for authors and associate editors … the list goes on.

The transition process from Nick has been smooth and we have spent much time discussing and collaborating over the past 6 months to make this so. I thank Nick for his tireless work for the Archives—we are now the equal highest ranked journal in conjunction with the IJPD (IF 2.3), testament to Nick’s hard work and persistence, especially to get an impact factor. It is also the time when we transition to a new manuscript management system, SNAPP, which will require some changes for our authors and editors. Although there will be no major changes to the Archive—as it is a time to maintain our direction and scope, and hopefully continue to improve our relevance to paediatric dentistry.

I have the pleasure of knowing all of the previous Editors-in-Chief of the Archives (Martin Curzon, Jack Toumba and Nick) for many years, and hope that I can maintain the high standards and commitment already established by my predecessors. I trust that the support from our reviewers and authors will persist and hopefully increase. Finding suitable reviewers has become far more difficult in the past few years and these individuals who assist us in the editorial process are vital to a successful journal. We have also increased the number of associate editors, adding youth and experience to this group of committed colleagues.

It is a great honour to be appointed the fourth editor-in-chief of the Archives and I thank the EAPD board for putting their faith in me. In finishing, I (may I assume we) wish to congratulate and thank Nick and wish him all the best for a happy and healthy future.
