Educational Leadership at the UMCG (University Medical Center Groningen)

In line with developments to rebalance recognition and rewards of academics, the UMCG started the Educational Leadership program in 2019. The program focuses on career and talent development of academic teachers and aims to boost innovation and quality of education and quality of its teachers accordingly. Four apprenticeship tracks of 1-1.5 years each, lead to Junior Academic (JAT), Academic (AT), Senior Academic (SAT) and Leading Academic Teachers (LAT) respectively. Workshops and assignments, aligned to the expertise and context of the participating teachers, encourage a research- and best practice-informed approach to education. In addition, there is ample attention for professional development and development of leadership competencies. Participating
academic teachers are individually guided by a senior teacher in their department and an educational mentor from the program. Existing educational qualifications in higher education (e.g. TQHE, TQA, UTQ, STQ, etc) link to or are embedded in the tracks. At the Educatio Festival, we hope to connect the dots by sharing the design and experience of our program and being open to learn from other experiences!
