    Abstract

Biography of the Dutch Sal Tas, activist, political writer and reporter/foreign correspondent in Paris of the newspaper Het Parool and the American non-communist left journal The New Leader during the 1950s. Tas was a controversial man with outspoken opinions. Radical left in his young years, later a moderate social-democrat and spokesman of the 'silent majority'. His political analyses and his radical anti-communism were appreciated by like-minded liberal American intellectuals and American organizations. With his (opiniated) travel stories of Africa, America and Asia he offered his Dutch and American readers new perspectives. Towards the end of his life he turned into a somewhat embittered man, disappointed with the radical turn of the young generation, and the lack of appreciation for his opinions.
