Abstract

The analysis and interpretation of molecular line data from the interstellar medium, and more specifically from regions of star formation, is bound to grow in importance over the coming decade with the upcoming Herschel Space Observatory and ALMA interferometer. In this dissertation, a newly developed three-dimensional code is presented that solves radiative transfer problems pertinent to the excitation of water lines. The code is used to study the emissivity of water in star-forming regions.
