    Abstract

The University of Franeker was founded in 1585, with a library at the start. One of the first purchases was the collection of the humanist prof. Petrejus Tiara, who died at February 9, 1586, with about 40 volumes in folio. The first description of the library has been preserved by a copy of the printed catalogue from 1601, probably made by Martinus Lydius, professor of theology. This catalogue describes a collection of about 300 folio's and 500 books in smaller format. Erasmus is the author with the most titles, 22, and four titles can be traced belonging originally to his private library. As a whole, the Franeker university library in 1601 offers a rather modern humanist collection, without a confessional emphasis, neither Roman Catholic nor Calvinistic.
