Abstract
This chapter sets out the research agenda in the field of expropriation (eminent domain) law for the coming years. International good governance standards, such as the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure, on the protection of property from expropriation challenge researchers to assess compliance of legislation, case law, and expropriation procedures with these instruments. The energy transition and nature conservation will refuel old debates in expropriation law. For instance, expropriations for private renewable energy installations revive the discussion about when economic development takings are justified. In the non-corporeal world, researchers need to help expropriation law to find its role, if any, in the governance of digital assets.
