Abstract
The coupling of waveguides is modeled to a mathematical problem for an internal region. The transition region may have a spatially dependent refractive index and irregular boundaries. Finite element solutions of this problem extending into the longitudinal direction are formulated. The resulting indefinite, non symmetric and sparse set of algebraic equations can be solved by an efficient algorithm.
