Multimedia project on Fre Meis of Groningen, leader of the worker's union and politician
Documentary about the political career and personal life of communist Fré Meis (1921-1992). Meis was not only a member of parliament for the Dutch communist party, he was also a committed strike leader, trade union leader and champion of the emancipation of labourers. His nickname was: the ‘Volkscommissaris van Groningen’ (People's Commissar of Groningen). He was also a member of the provincial states and town councillor in Groningen. The strikes, which Meis led in the strawboard industry in the east of the province of Groningen, brought him national fame. The film was co-produced by RTVNoord and the Documentation Centre of Dutch Political Parties.
