Abstract

This roundtable discussion, hosted by Artemis Alliance, broughttogether international experts in March 2025 to examine the impactof gender and identity disinformation (GID) on female politiciansand its implications for democratic participation. The discussionuses the term GID to encompass disinformation targeting women, gender diverse and LGBT+ individuals, recognizing the lack of universally agreed definitions in this emerging field. The discussionwas transcribed and edited for publication, providing criticalinsights into how GID operates as a systematic strategy to undermine women’s democratic participation across different culturalcontexts. Drawing on research from the South Caucasus andCentral Europe, participants explored the personal, professional, and democratic costs of GID, current regulatory gaps in EU frameworks, and immediate protective measures for women in politics. The roundtable featured presentations of original research findingsalongside expert analysis of platform accountability, legalresponses, and practical solutions for countering this form of information manipulation
