Abstract

General introduction into Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Chapter 2 review of the literature on genetic epidemiology of MS with emphasis on whole genome screens. Chapter 3 Haplotype sharing, association analysis and TDT in the HLA region in MS patients. Support for a 50 kb interval containing HLA DQB1. Chapter 4: analysis of the inheritance mode of HLA-associated susceptibility: the effect is stronger than additive. Chapter 5: comparison of relapsing remitting/secondary progressive and primary progressive MS for HLA region: differences and similarities, suggesting that both types are part of a spectrum. Chapter 7 summary and conclusions, chapter 8 samenvatting.
