Growth aspirations of women entrepreneurs in tourism in Tanzania

    This thesis presents empirical evidence based on a qualitative and quantitative study of women entrepreneurs in tourism in Tanzania. Applying Bourdieu’s theory of practice and Scott’s institutional theory, we analyse the relationship between the socio-economic background and firm growth. In doing so, we examine influences of field (formal and informal institutions), (various forms of) capital, and habitus (predispositions) on business growth.
    Our main qualitative findings provide ample evidence that the institutional environment in Tanzania rooted in the regulative pillar is considered by many female entrepreneurs as challenging, particularly within mainland Tanzania, and-as a result prevent some entrepreneurs to operate in the formal system. Also, the normative institutions of tourism in Zanzibar undermine the lucrative tourism sector and create tensions and pressure from some radical groups. Findings however confirm that women entrepreneurs incorporate their habitus in such a manner that they organize themselves through their professional networks and are able to actively respond to such institutional tensions by complying, defying, manipulating, or avoiding these normative institution pressures.
    The findings of the quantitative study confirm that the socio-economic background is a crucial factor for accessing cultural, social, and economic capital. While education and role models of family members are crucial for women entrepreneurs to access formal education, family support is also essential for accessing social and economic capital. Beyond this, the mother’s level of education also plays a crucial role towards the positive aspirations of women entrepreneurs on business growth.
    We concluded, therefore, that if growth aspirations amongst women entrepreneurs have to be understood in the Tanzanian context, it is important to embed the socio-economic background as essential in the academic analysis. We encourage institutions to take this into account when developing their policies on women entrepreneurship in the tourism sector.
