Abstract
f leading Dutch educationalists would have had their way, in the 1930’s and 1940’s all education in the Netherlands would have become Dalton education. Actually, in 1950, just eighteen of the seven thousand elementary schools were Dalton schools. Although the Dalton Plan had experienced a promi- sing heyday in the 1920’s. The stagnating development in the Netherlands resembles the history of the Dalton Plan in England and the United States. A well-known explanation is that of Tyack and Tobin. In an attempt to break the ‘grammar of schooling’, the Dalton Plan succumbed to the factors that perpe- tuate the ‘grammar of schooling’. We look into the development of Dalton Education in the Netherlands between 1920 and 1970. We use the ‘grammar of schooling’-theory, but the more sophisticated version of amongst others Viñao Frago and Depaepe c.s.
