The main purpose of this study is to elucidate the substantial variation in the prescribing patterns of physicians. Differences between physicians have been documented concerning overall rates of prescribing, rates of prescribing particular drugs, drug costs and drug prescribing quality. Review of literature reveals a common theme of variation in prescribing patterns at all levels unexplained by factors of morbidity. The purpose of the study reported here is to provide an overview by examining how different aspects of prescribing behaviour are affected by different factors taking into account their interrelationships. ...
